About the Item
This painting was created using a combination of acrylic paint, spray paint, and collaged materials on raw canvas. Its title, "Stack and Play," pays homage to the artist's source of inspiration: constructing small sculptures with his son using found wood pieces with unique shapes. The vibrant brushwork, reflecting spontaneity and energy, mirrors the dynamic process through which his son approaches art.
Amidst the large geometric shapes, spray-painted marks initially framed the composition. A subtle yet significant detail in the top left corner involves attaching and subsequently removing old painted canvas scraps, leaving a distinctive painted stamp. The raw canvas's beige/off-white tones, juxtaposed with various shades of black, infuse a modern yet earthy essence into any space.
Bold strokes of black paint, applied with a broad brush, reveal glimpses of the canvas underneath, resulting in a natural, slightly unfinished aesthetic.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
